SHADOW - POST SURGERY UPDATE

UPDATE 26/04/12

Shadow was re-admitted to Gasing Hospital because he managed to take off his bandage and sutures while at his foster carers. As such his wound is now slightly infected. Hopefully we can bring him back to rest at his foster carer's in about a week's time. Please pray that Shadow recovers quickly.

Please note that I have revised the target collection to RM3,500 as todate I have already incurred and paid RM2,950. I am not sure how much his current bill for boarding and treatment at Gasing will be, and there will also be follow up treatment later on at Dr Singham once we discharge him again from Gasing.

In the mean time I would like to thank all of you once again for contributing towards Shadow's treatment costs. He is a very lucky dog!!!

I picked Shadow up from Dr Prem's this morning and he was so happy to see me and Chandra. We could barely handle him as he was giving us a full body wag and was jumping up and down in excitement. While on the one hand this is a good sign, it is also a bad thing...

Dr Prem had a long chat with us before we were allowed to go and get Shadow to explain Shadow's condition and the care that he will need for the coming months. I am going to try and re-explain it all to the best of my ability, so here goes:

Basically, Dr Prem told us that Shadow's surgery was slightly complicated as the bone had hardened and that the space between the fractures had lots of matter in it, which meant that he had the fracture for some time already.

Unfortunately these did not turn up in the x-rays to give Dr Prem an accurate assessment of the situation, which was why the surgery took longer than anticipated. Additionally, this meant that Shadow could not be neutered at the same time.

But nonetheless, the plates have been implanted and Shadow MUST rest his leg, i.e. he MUST NOT put pressure on that leg for at least 10 days, and then after that we can start to slowly allow him to put pressure on it over the course of about 6-8 weeks.

As such, we have to cage Shadow for the duration and only allow him restricted movement so that the leg can heal properly. We will have to take him to Dr Singham on a weekly basis to get the sutures cleaned and the leg assessed to ensure that it is healing properly, which includes yet another x-ray in 3 weeks time.

In the mean time, however, Shadow is really very happy to be back at Chandra's house. He could hardly contain himself and dashed straight into the house and inspected every corner to make sure that things were how he left it. It took the both of us to get him into the cage that we prepared for him.

So please pray that Shadow will be a good boy and not get up to too much mischief so that his leg can heal quickly and properly.

I would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated towards Shadow's medical treatment so far! I really appreciate it and I am amazed that there even people whom I don't know that have contributed. Shadow is really lucky that so many people are rooting for him. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

MISHKA THE KITTEN NEEDS A HOME

Mishka the kitten was rescued by Marilyn from a drain... 

Mishka has since been dewormed and is now looking for her forever home.

 Age: 3 months

Sex: Female

Weight: 1.1kg

Dewormed: Yes

Vaccinated: Yes

Spayed: Not yet as she is still too young

 

 Conditions for adopting Mishka:

1. Mishka must live indoors.

SHADOW ~ POST SURGERY

Shadow had surgery on his leg yesterday to insert the plate and pins/screws to mend his fracture.

The surgery took over 4 hours as the bone had hardened significantly. This means that Shadow would have had that broken leg for sometime.

Anyway I visited Shadow today and he is recovering from his surgery. He isn't happy to be at the hospital although he needs to rest his leg properly.

We are still in need of funds for Shadow's surgery which we will have to settle by the end of the week.

SHADOW ~ PRE-SURGERY CHECK UP

Today I took Shadow (and Chandra) to Dr Prem at Gasing Hospital for a pre-surgery check-up to make sure that he is okay to have his surgery on Saturday.

Dr Prem was quite pleased with Shadow's condition and has given us the OK for the surgery to go ahead on Saturday.

As we are unsure of Shadow's medical history, he will be vaccinated prior to the surgery. Shadow will be neutered as well while undergoing surgery for his leg. This is so that he won't have to go under anasthesia twice.

You can just see that his left foot is swollen

Shadow has put on some weight, but still needs a bit more bulk

The estimated cost of the surgery is RM2,500 as mentioned previously. As we have requested for Shadow to be vaccinated and neutered as well, this may be slightly higher. However, the actual cost will only be known post surgery.

 

Our target amount is RM3,000 and we would like to appeal to all of you to spare a small amount to help Shadow. No amount is too small... 

Todate, the cost incurred for Shadow is RM318 at Hayward Animal Clinic, where Shadow's initial check-up, bloodwork, x-rays, frontline treatment, etc were done. 

We have also paid for treatment of Chandra's own dog and cat who have unfortunately fallen ill since the arrival of Shadow (see attached receipt below). The total receipt is for RM430.

SHADOW GOING FOR PRE-SURGERY CHECK UP TOMORROW

Dr Prem has reviewed the x-rays and has tentatively scheduled surgery for this Saturday. I will be taking Shadow in for a pre-surgery check up tomorrow morning to make sure that Shadow is good to go for the surgery. Wish me luck folks...

FUNDS NEEDED FOR SHADOW'S SURGERY

This lovely boy was rescued a few days ago by a lady called Chandra. He had apparently fallen in a drain and she did not have the heart to leave him there.

And so she brought him home. She soon realised that his left foreleg was injured. But unfortunately, she does not have the funds to seek medical treatment for the dog.

So Sherrina and I have decided to try and help Chandra out. Shadow (originally called Boy by Chandra) was taken to Dr Singgham of Hayward Animal Clinic for a thorough checkup.

He has several superficial wounds, ticks and also a swollen lymph node.
He is also somewhat underweight.

Dr Singgham has dewormed him and has also taken blood for a full blood test to make sure that he hasn't got any other underlying problems. The results should be out by tomorrow or the day after.

Shadow had x-rays of his leg done, and as we suspected, his left leg is broken quite badly.The x-rays show this very clearly.

Shadow will need to go for surgery soon to ensure that his leg heals. Dr Singgham has since sent on his x-rays to Dr Pem of Gasing Veterinay Hospital for review.

Based on intial phone consultation with Dr Prem, it would seem that Shadow would need to have screws and possibly one or two plates inserted to pull the bone together.

The initial estimated cost for the surgery alone is RM2,500. This does not include the costs of Dr Singgham's consultation, x-rays, blood test and flea treatment. We estimate that the cost to treat Shadow may rise to RM3,500 or more.

Shadow is a very sweet dog and will make a good companion. Eventhough he must be in severe pain, he has let us handle him without showing even the slightest bit of aggression. Please help us help Shadow walk properly again.

As such we would like to appeal to all of you to help Chandra by donating towards the cost of Shadow's medical treatment.

We will post all amounts collected and also the bills for the treatment. Any leftover money will be donated to other animal rescue cases as we see fit.
