SHADOW ~ POST SURGERY

Shadow had surgery on his leg yesterday to insert the plate and pins/screws to mend his fracture.

The surgery took over 4 hours as the bone had hardened significantly. This means that Shadow would have had that broken leg for sometime.

Anyway I visited Shadow today and he is recovering from his surgery. He isn't happy to be at the hospital although he needs to rest his leg properly.

We are still in need of funds for Shadow's surgery which we will have to settle by the end of the week.

SHADOW ~ PRE-SURGERY CHECK UP

Today I took Shadow (and Chandra) to Dr Prem at Gasing Hospital for a pre-surgery check-up to make sure that he is okay to have his surgery on Saturday.

Dr Prem was quite pleased with Shadow's condition and has given us the OK for the surgery to go ahead on Saturday.

As we are unsure of Shadow's medical history, he will be vaccinated prior to the surgery. Shadow will be neutered as well while undergoing surgery for his leg. This is so that he won't have to go under anasthesia twice.

Shadow has put on some weight, but still needs a bit more bulk

The estimated cost of the surgery is RM2,500 as mentioned previously. As we have requested for Shadow to be vaccinated and neutered as well, this may be slightly higher. However, the actual cost will only be known post surgery.

 

Our target amount is RM3,000 and we would like to appeal to all of you to spare a small amount to help Shadow. No amount is too small... 

Todate, the cost incurred for Shadow is RM318 at Hayward Animal Clinic, where Shadow's initial check-up, bloodwork, x-rays, frontline treatment, etc were done. 

We have also paid for treatment of Chandra's own dog and cat who have unfortunately fallen ill since the arrival of Shadow (see attached receipt below). The total receipt is for RM430.

Dr Prem has reviewed the x-rays and has tentatively scheduled surgery for this Saturday. I will be taking Shadow in for a pre-surgery check up tomorrow morning to make sure that Shadow is good to go for the surgery. Wish me luck folks...

FUNDS NEEDED FOR SHADOW'S SURGERY

This lovely boy was rescued a few days ago by a lady called Chandra. He had apparently fallen in a drain and she did not have the heart to leave him there.

And so she brought him home. She soon realised that his left foreleg was injured. But unfortunately, she does not have the funds to seek medical treatment for the dog.

So Sherrina and I have decided to try and help Chandra out. Shadow (originally called Boy by Chandra) was taken to Dr Singgham of Hayward Animal Clinic for a thorough checkup.

He has several superficial wounds, ticks and also a swollen lymph node.
He is also somewhat underweight.

Dr Singgham has dewormed him and has also taken blood for a full blood test to make sure that he hasn't got any other underlying problems. The results should be out by tomorrow or the day after.

Shadow had x-rays of his leg done, and as we suspected, his left leg is broken quite badly.The x-rays show this very clearly.

Shadow will need to go for surgery soon to ensure that his leg heals. Dr Singgham has since sent on his x-rays to Dr Pem of Gasing Veterinay Hospital for review.

Based on intial phone consultation with Dr Prem, it would seem that Shadow would need to have screws and possibly one or two plates inserted to pull the bone together.

The initial estimated cost for the surgery alone is RM2,500. This does not include the costs of Dr Singgham's consultation, x-rays, blood test and flea treatment. We estimate that the cost to treat Shadow may rise to RM3,500 or more.

Shadow is a very sweet dog and will make a good companion. Eventhough he must be in severe pain, he has let us handle him without showing even the slightest bit of aggression. Please help us help Shadow walk properly again.

As such we would like to appeal to all of you to help Chandra by donating towards the cost of Shadow's medical treatment.

We will post all amounts collected and also the bills for the treatment. Any leftover money will be donated to other animal rescue cases as we see fit.

Dog Scalded by Mee Stall Owner in Seksyen 17 PJ

A dog was scalded with boiling water by a wantan mee stall owner a couple of days ago. This was apparently witnessed by an old lady who rescued the dog and is now looking after the dog. A concerned citizen, Megan Wong, has taken the following pictures of the perpetrator and the injuries that he inflicted on the dog in the hope that he will be brought to justice.

This wantan mee stall is located in Seksyen 17, PJ and the restaurant is Kedai Kopi Lucky.

AWAM has contacted the person who posted these pictures on Facebook and she has informed AWAM that SPCA has already been notified. However, the SPCA has informed her that no action can be taken unless there is video evidence of the crime being committed.

This is absolutely unacceptable as there is already photographic evidence and an eye witness to the crime. The old lady who witnessed the crime and rescued the dog is apparently more than willing to come forward to give a statement against the perpetrator. Surely this is adequate to take at least some action against him?

We would therefore like to urge everyone to boycott the stall and even the restaurant, to show that animal cruelty cannot be condoned. Additionally, please lodge a report with the DVS and write in to the press to voice your concern. We need to speak for the voiceless.

RAW MEAT DIET FOR DOGS AND CATS

PN ROBBIAH'S CATS HAVE BEEN RELOCATED

17 of Pn Robbiah's cats (11 females from the Shah Alam vet, and 6 males from the Setiawangsa vet) were relocated to their new home - a lovely bamboo farm out in the country last . I would like to thank the people who made this possible - namely the volunteers who came with me to catch the cats at Pn. Robbiah's house and then to relocate them, the vets and most importantly each and everyone of you who contributed towards this cause.

I do apologise for the delay in posting the final amounts incurred for Pn Robbiah's cats on this blog. I had posted an update on my personal blog but completely forgot about this one as work has been mental and I have also been travelling extensively.

Anyway, here is the latest update:

**The adopter has decided to sponsor the entire bill at Setiawangsa as it was quite a substantial amount. She does not want to make the amount public, but all I can say is that it has exceeded the RM1,000 that she had initially pledged for 10 cats (as there were 25 cats sent there in total).

 

Therefore, the RM1,000 included in the sponsorhip amount will be subtracted as the amount incurred at the Setiawangsa Vet. As such there was a balance of RM1,085 in sponsorship money.

SPONSORSHIP NEEDED FOR PN ROBBIAH'S CATS

A good Samaritan who wishes to remain anonymus has called me and offered to take ALL of Pn Robbiah's cats. They will be well looked after, and will have lots of space to roam etc. Her only condition is that ALL of them MUST be spayed and neutered before she takes them. She has also offerred to sponsor the spaying and neutering of 10 of the cats, but has requested that I raise the funds for the rest.

Therefore I would like to appeal to all of you to please sponsor the neutering of at least 1 cat.

The cost of neutering is a MALE cat is RM75.00 including post-surgery care
at Setiawangsa Veterinary Clinic

The cost of spaying a FEMALE cat is RM120 including post-surgery care
at Shah Alam Veterinary Clinic.

This does not include amounts that may be incurred for treating cats that are sick, and THIS PRICE IS A ONE TIME DEAL only for Pn Robbiah's cats. These vets will not be taking in cats for any other cases.

I will post the amounts incurred at the vet, and if there is any access or leftover from any funds raised, this will go towards animal welfare work in general.

FRIDAY: 3 JUNE 2011

We have rescued a total of 37 cats!!! 20 adult cats, 3 kittens, 3 Mother Cats and their 11 Kittens!!! They will all be spayed/neutered before being sent to the adopter. Some of the cats are quite sickly, so they will be treated before they are spayed or neutered.

There are still a few more cats at Pn Robbiah's that we have not been able to catch today. If any of you have the resources to help out in catching them etc, please give Pn Robbiah a shout.

THE RESCUE OPERATION

Pn Robbiah is a 58 year old retiree that feeds and cares for over 30 stray cats in her area. Quite a number of these cats have actually been dumped at her home. With her limited means, she does the best that she can for these unwanted strays.

Many of them are sickly, and she takes them to the vet for treatment and looks after them as best as she can.

However, recently a neighbour filed a complaint to MPAJ. Pn Robbiah has been given till Sunday 5 June to remove all the cats from her premises and surrounding area or they will be confiscated.
